Amit Mukerjee represents the famous tradition of the Kirana Gharana and Ustad Amir Khan’s individualistic school of Hindustani classical music. Trained under Shri Shankar Majumdar, a senior disciple of the Ustad, he was fortunate to have often interacted with the Ustad, one of the greatest musicians of the century.
For over three decades he was an Earth-scientist with the Government of India, working in the Himalayas and several other remote regions. During that time, he pursued his first love, music, equally ardently, and would always term it his parallel profession. Joining the ITC SRA in 2000 helped him to delve further into the research of the Amirkhani gayaki. An ‘A’ graded broadcaster of All India Radio and Doordarshan, Amit Mukerjee has participated in all the major classical music conferences of India and abroad, including the National Programme of All India Radio and Doordarshan and the ITC Sangeet Sammelans, thrilling cognoscenti and laymen alike.
